Super Green Biofuels, Inc. (SG Biofuels) has identified that the emerging economies of Latin America present a unique opportunity to plant “energy” crops such as Jatropha. These countries have low-priced land with high-quality soil and very-low production costs. In addition, 20-years of stable, democratic governments has resulted in a favorable investment climate as identified by various investment banks, the IMF and World Bank. This has opened the door to foreign direct investment, which is evidenced by the strong free-trade agreement (CAFTA) with the U.S. Furthermore, the region has a well-established agribusiness economy with specific expertise in large-scale plantation development.

The synthesis of these elements has created the opportunity to build a world-class business that will deliver feedstock at a dramatically lower cost than current suppliers. Cloud Break’s investment goal for SG Biofuels is to create the world’s single largest provider of Jatropha feedstock for bio-diesel production.

The crop: Jatropha

Jatropha Curcas is a non-edible shrub that originated in Central America.

Because it is non-edible, there are no socio-political issues about diverting food to energy (i.e. corn, sugar cane, soy, wheat).

It can grow almost anywhere. However, our experience demonstrates that the seed and oil yield was enhanced significantly when planted in “good” soils with the right elevation, rainfall and pH.

Plowing and planting are not required regularly as the plant has a life expectancy of approximately forty years.

It is common for Jatropha to yield 200 gallons (800 liters) per hectare per year in average soils with no management. However, proper pruning, fertilizer and in some cases irrigation can significantly enhance crop and oil yield. For example, our proven germplasm (seedling) and plantation management plan has increased the yield to greater than 500 gallons (1,925 liters) per hectare per year.
